It may costa relatively modest fee of £75.50 to buy, but to Daniel, his new passport is priceless. Read his story to find out why.
“Without it life is a struggle, because I don’t have any ID, and without ID I can’t do anything,” he says. “I can’t apply for work or open a bank account or even do some voluntary work. Without ID it’s impossible for you to prove you are who you say you are.”
Understandably, if Daniel is to move on and rebuild his life after spending the best part of a year without a home, being able to do these things is vitally important and so, while most other people use their passports to go on holiday, for him it’s his ticket to a better future.
Daniel, 42, has high hopes for next year, having covered a lot of ground in the past 12 months. Last Christmas he was living in a hostel in Burton, having lost his home when his relationship broke down and he developed a drug and alcohol addiction.
“Last Christmas was horrible,” says Daniel. “I was living in the hostel but while I was able to be with my family, I was still withdrawing from the drugs. They went off to see my sister, but I had to go and score some more drugs to make myself feel better.
“I’d been on drink and drugs before but went back to them when things started to go wrong in my life. Then what happens is the people that you get your drugs from become your friends and you end up living in the hostel with them.
“Eventually I got out of the hostel because I couldn’t stand it any longer. I ended up sofa-surfing and put my name down on the housing list because I didn’t want to go back. I wanted to sort my life out.”
Daniel got in touch with the local council, which put him in temporary accommodation in a hotel when the coronavirus lockdown came in. It also put him in touch with Derventio through its Home4Me scheme, which is a bespoke initiative set up in Burton to find housing for homeless people.
Eventually, Daniel moved into supported housing in June, before eventually getting his own flat through the council in November.
“I don’t have much to furnish it with but it’s great being in my own place, I love it,” he says. “Now I want to get some training and get back into work, ideally as a furniture restorer.
“That’s why I needed the passport and I’m really grateful that Derventio has been able to give me the money for it through the Empowerment Fund.
“It will make such a difference. Things are going really well for me at the moment, I’m like a different person to this time last year and I’m feeling hopeful about 2021.”
