Derventio Housing Trust provides accommodation and support to people who have been homeless and are dealing with other challenges such as mental health and social isolation. Below are some of the main barriers that the people we work with are facing. Your support will help people to overcome these issues and move to a home of their own.
This is one of the most common issues faced by the people we work with. Poor mental health can make it harder to cope with housing problems, while being homeless or having problems in your home can make your mental health worse. Many people have experienced increased anxiety this year because of the coronavirus situation. Two thirds of the people we work with have mental health issues.
People who sleep on the streets often suffer from multiple health conditions, such as poor mental health and drug or alcohol misuse. They are also in greater danger of experiencing violence and abuse.Last year 57% of the people we worked with had experience of rough sleeping.
57% of the people we worked with last year were facing two or more problems including poor mental health, alcohol/drug misuse, learning difficulties and offending behaviour. This can make it harder to address problems and get the right support.
People who have been in prison are more likely to become homeless and can find it difficult to reconnect with society and find employment.
Being addicted to drugs and/ or alcohol is both a cause and consequence of homelessness. Many people in difficult situations use them to self-medicate and this can lead to physical health problems. Almost half of the people we worked with last year were dealing with substance misuse.
The health and wellbeing of people who experience homelessness are poorer than that of the general population. The average age of death for a homeless person is 44 years.
